Pregnancy is such a wild mix of joy and… well, nausea. One minute you’re daydreaming about baby names, and the next, you’re sprinting to the bathroom wondering how your favorite foods suddenly turned against you. If you’re in your first trimester and battling morning sickness, you are not alone.
As an Eastern, Pennsylvania maternity photographer who has been through those queasy early weeks myself — and spent years talking with other mamas-to-be — I know how tough it can be to keep your glow when your stomach won’t cooperate. The good news? There are some gentle, natural ways to help ease nausea and make these first few months a little more manageable.

1. Eat Before You Get Out of Bed
This is one of those simple tricks that makes a big difference. Keep a small snack (like crackers, pretzels, or dry cereal) on your nightstand and nibble before you even sit up. It helps balance your blood sugar and calm your stomach before the day starts.
2. Ginger Is Your New Best Friend
From ginger tea to ginger chews, this ancient root is famous for its anti-nausea properties. Sip it slowly throughout the day or try adding fresh ginger slices to hot water with a squeeze of lemon.
3. Keep Snacks Handy
Long stretches without food can make morning sickness worse. Try grazing throughout the day instead of eating large meals — think applesauce, toast, or a handful of almonds. The goal is to keep something in your stomach without overwhelming it.
4. Stay Hydrated (But Go Slow)
Drinking too much at once can make nausea worse, so take small sips frequently instead. If plain water feels impossible, try adding a splash of lemon or cucumber, or even an electrolyte drink to help you stay hydrated.
5. Try Vitamin B6
Some studies have shown that Vitamin B6 can help reduce pregnancy nausea. If you can stomach them, these foods are a great source of B6: spinach, avocados, potatoes, bananas, walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts, oats and seeds.
6. Fresh Air and Gentle Movement
A few deep breaths of cool air or a short walk outside can-do wonder. It might feel impossible at first, but even five minutes outdoors can help reset your senses and ease that queasy feeling.
7. Rest Without Guilt
Your body is working overtime right now — growing a whole new human is no small thing. Give yourself permission to rest. Cancel plans, take naps, and listen to your body. You deserve it.
