Did you know there are more than the typical 3 trimesters of pregnancy? Today I’m spilling the tea on everything you can expect from conception to the mysterious "4th trimester."

I honestly had no idea there was a "4th trimester until after I gave birth to my daughter! I'm so glad I knew about it with my second pregnancy with my son, so I was better prepared and knew what to expect.

I’m not only going to share with you what to expect in each, but also a lot of local resources you can use as you plan for your first pregnancy, newborn and birth in Reading, Pennsylvania.

First Trimester: The Secret Life of Pregnancy

The first trimester is like a secret club where only you and your growing baby are members. During these first 12 weeks, your body is working overtime to create a new life, and you might be feeling the effects (hello, morning sickness). It's like you're part of an exclusive group that only fellow expectant moms can truly understand.

I remember when I was in this stage with my second pregnancy, I would sneak off to the bathroom at work to deal with morning sickness, all while trying to keep my pregnancy a secret from my coworkers. It felt like I was living a double life as a superhero, minus the cool cape!

One thing that actually really helped me though was making sure I had a high protein breakfast and having protein granola bars on hand for when the nausea came on. I liked the natural options that are more neutral in flavor and taste less like a candy bar, it was easier on my stomach.

Here are some other resources for your first pregnancy in Reading, Pennsylvania for the 1st trimester.

Second Trimester: The Golden Age

For many, the second trimester is the golden age of pregnancy, where you can finally start enjoying the journey. With the nausea subsiding and the baby bump showing, it's time to embrace the experience.

This is a great time to stay active during your pregnancy, and what better way than by working out with other moms at Fit For Moms in Reading, Pennsylvania?

Not only is it a wonderful way to stay active, but it's also an opportunity to build friendships with other local moms who understand exactly what you're going through. Having a supportive community during pregnancy can make all the difference.

Third Trimester: The Home Stretch

The third trimester is when things start to get real. As you prepare for your baby's arrival, you'll want to make sure you have everything in place for a smooth transition.

The Nursery

For my first pregnancy, I had the nursery completely finished two months before my daughter arrived. But with my second pregnancy, we didn't finish the nursery until two months after my son was born because we knew he would be sleeping in a bassinet next to our bed during those first few months.

The truth is, there isn't a right or wrong way, do what works best for your family.

If you aren't planning to set up the nursery right away, make sure you have a newborn station set up near the bassinet with all of your essentials within easy reach. I also recommend washing and organizing your newborn and 0–3 month clothing ahead of time so everything is ready when your little one arrives.

Reading, Pennsylvania Doula

If you are looking for doula services, I highly recommend Pure Birthing Bliss. Lauren offers doula and birth work services serving Reading, PA and surrounding areas.

Birth: The Main Event

The moment you've been waiting for is finally here: birth! Whether you're planning a natural birth or a C-section for your first pregnancy in Reading, Pennsylvania, this stage is exciting and emotional!

I had two very different birth experiences. My first was at Reading Hospital, and my second was a home birth with the Reading Midwife Center. I truly loved my experience with my midwives and having my son at home, but every mama's journey is different. My biggest piece of advice is to choose the birth experience that feels right for you and your family.

The 4th Trimester: What No One Tells You When You Are in Your First Pregnancy in Reading, Pennsylvania

Surprise! Your journey doesn't end with birth. The 4th trimester is the first three months of your baby's life, where both of you are adjusting to the world outside the womb.

With my son, I really struggled with postpartum depression. If you ever find yourself struggling, please let your doctor know and seek help as soon as possible.

I actually mentioned how I was feeling to my son's pediatrician, who immediately contacted the Midwife Center. They were able to get me in right away. Not only did they connect me with counseling, but they also started me on short-term medication until I felt like myself again.

Asking for help was one of the best decisions I made. You don't have to go through it alone.

Lastly, if you need breastfeeding support don't forget to seek it out. I recommend Making A Mama LLC. Christina is a lactation consultant serving Reading, PA and the surrounding Area.
